Taking Back Sundays

Ah, Sundays. They're all about watching the match on Sky and negotiating that extra large newspaper while trying not to let the pangs of guilt about the night before overwhelm thee. No wonder people go to church. But stop, heathen, and turn thine back on that sacred house, for there's plenty to do on Sundays nowadays.

If Saturday was a bit too Sodom and Gomorrah for your Catholic tastes, then you'll need to bury the memories with some soothing but stimulating diversion. The FACT Centre is open Sundays and, aside from watching a challenging new film, you can also be baffled by the latest new media exhibition in the galleries, which are open until 6pm. On a similar tack, the newly re-opened Bluecoat also has galleries open on a Sunday, some featuring artworks that aren't on a TV. There's also a lovely new restaurant - Upstairs at the Bluecoat - which offers top quality nosh for those who have over-stimulated themselves.

For those whose Sunday conscience is clean, but would like to feel guilty the day after, when the churches are shut, then there's nowhere better to visit than the Albert on Lark Lane. Grab a Sunday dinner, watch the match, then settle down for the fully interactive weekly punch-up that usually occurs with the nutters who are basically still partying from the night before. If Saturday left you as out of pocket as Vince Noir's catsuit, then why not take a bike trip. There are plenty of great routes, but we recommend going to the Pier Head and cycling up the promenade towards Aigburth. Alternatively, head to William Brown Street, where the triple whammy of the Walker Gallery, World Museum Liverpool and Central Library will please the potless.

On the other hand, if by some miracle you end up with more moolah than you started with the night before - a good run in the casino say - then why not blow your wodge not on taking advantage on Sunday Trading Laws but on a slap-up Sunday lunch at the likes of 60 Hope Street or any of the fancy restaurants around the Philharmonic. The Albert Dock is another great place to take someone you're trying to impress. Not only is it a wonderful building, but you can also visit the renowned Tate Gallery, in between wining and dining in Est, Est, Est, BabyCream, the Pan American etc.

But Sundays should mostly be about traditional Sunday roasts, just like mam used to make. If she was inept but cheap, then the Pilgrim is a popular destination, especially for students, although the gravy is much like having sex in a canoe. Better quality can be had in the Blackburne Arms Hotel, for those whose mum's knew what they were doing, although only people with mothers named Delia Smith will appreciate the London Carriage Works. The Egg Cafe does splendid nut roast for those who grew up on organic hippy communes.

But for those people who have woken up in a pool of mucus and blood, perhaps from wandering innocently around Concert Square the night before with a loud hatred of scallies, we recommend a calming Sunday trip to the NHS drop-in centre on Great Charlotte Street, handily situated in the centre of town and offering M*A*S*H*-like facilities for Liverpool's glorious fallen.
