The world's best foods

When you realize you've been eating a combination of takeaway sandwiches and pub fish and chips for the last two weeks, you might think you need a bit of a change. We think so too. We're lending a helping hand by putting together this list of top-notch places to go when you've got to branch out and get a little world cuisine.

Il Forno
132 Duke Street, L1 5AG

Next stop, Italia. No seriously, this place is so bedecked in Da Vinci and Italian peppers and cheeses that you might forget you're not actually Rome. The food is equally authentic, with pastas to die for and pizza that's cooked in an oven shaped like a massive Roman statue. They also have a huge wine list and their own gelateria. Yeah, we're oohing and ahhing at the thought too.

Tavern Co.
Queen Square, L1 1RH

If it's Mexican food you're craving, Tavern Co. is a pretty good bet. The décor has just the right amount of Latin influence, and the moody lighting makes it a good place to take a date. They're serving fajitas, burritos, chimichangas and lots of BBQ for very reasonable prices, while the wine bar is also amply stocked.

Sapporo Teppanyaki
134 Duke Street, L15AG

How about trading in your ham and cheese baguette for some flavours of the Far East? This Japanese restaurant is also a sushi and noodle bar, but the real draw is the teppanyaki tables. The chefs cook your meal on a huge grill in the middle of the table so you can expect some extensive showmanship and lots of big flames. It's also a perfect conversation starter in case your date is a bit quiet. Or you can just chat with the cook.

Christakis Greek Taverna
7 York Street, L1 5BN

You're guaranteed a good time and some great Greek food at Christakis Greek Taverna, where belly dancing, music, and plate smashing are perfectly normal occurrences. Go between 5pm and 7pm any day of the week and your starter and main course will only be £7.95. Hoummus! Kebabs! Mussaka! Yum.

Gulshan
544-548 Aigburth Road, L19 3QG

Get a taste of India at this award-winning restaurant and tapas bar, where painted images of India adorn the walls and the huge lounge is the perfect place for an after dinner drink. Sample yummy dishes like chicken tikka, naan and tandoori chicken, and for those of you who don't eat meat, this place has an extensive vegetarian menu.

Bistro Jacques
37-39 Hardman Street, L1 9AS

Send your taste buds on a trip to France with a meal at Bistro Jacques. With its bright red exterior, you'll have no problem spotting this place, but you might be perplexed over what to order. With dishes like a chicken, mushroom and gruyere crepe, or French classic veal escalope on the menu, you'll be wondering what you've been eating all your life... and why.
